History of Chelsea Piers

After 30 years of planning, the famous piers opened in 1910. Primarily a passenger terminal, Chelsea Piers were scheduled to dock the Titanic after her maiden voyage. Instead, they received her survivors after she sunk on April 14th, 1912. Another disaster followed in 1915, when the Lusitania left for England, but was hit by a German torpedo. Passenger service continued until both World Wars required the port, it became a cargo terminal in the 1950s, then fell into disrepair before its recent renovation.
